The Challenge

Public sector reforms have introduced private sector competition into the thermal generation sector, making the prevailing public sector culture in this state-owned enterprise a hindrance to effective and e client operations. Concurrent with the new competitive challenges, the next 5 years or so will see almost 50 top leadership employees retiring from the firm. The imminent loss of such experienced leadership is a challenge but also provides opportunities to develop a new type of leadership suited for the new competitive environment. The company needed new strategies and processes to create a new mindset and culture among leaders to compete e effectively in the new business environment. It also requires all 150 top executives to become new type of leaders with innovation, customer centricity, commercial agility and high performance as prime capabilities.

The Solution

NiBS designed a 5-module program that focuses on developing the strategic thinking and commercial ability of leaders and managers to contribute and add disncvve value to the firm’s transformaon. The 5-module program delivered over a period of me convenient for the leadership included:

  • Module I: Leading Strategic Innovation
  • Module II: High Performance Leadership
  • Module III: Business Nego}aon
  • Module IV: Strategy Formaon & Execuon
  • Module V: Service Quality & Customer Experience Management

In each module, team of participants complete specific practical projects for the consideration of the leadership. Each participant develops an action journal detailing what new actions and activities he/she will undertake to improve performance at the end of the module.

The Result

With the completion of the first module for all 150 executives, over 20 new viable projects designed to take the firm into the future have been identified by teams. Participants have adopted a new strategic thinking framework applicable to the public sector to discover their leadership roots and foundations, diagnose their leadership tasks, and develop a personal leadership path that ensures inspiration and resilience. The program continues to evolve, and its content and structure are fined-tuned to best serve the firm.
